Friends of Kewalos is a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of recreational users of the Kewalo Basin Park area. We are surfers, fishermen, divers, picnickers, and runners who use the area daily for exercise, to relieve stress, and for pure social enjoyment. We also have many supporters who do not even use the park but believe in our mission.

Kewalo Basin Park symbolizes a way of life as many of us have been coming to the Park for the better part of our lives. It is a place where lifelong friendships have evolved and everybody knows your name. The parks’ location in the heart of Honolulu, quiet charm, low-key atmosphere, and beautiful vistas of Diamond Head and the ocean, keep all of us coming back.

We were formed as a grassroots organization in May of 2005 under the name of Friends of Kewalo Basin Park Association due to the announced partnership between Alexander and Baldwin and the Hawaii Community Development Authority to develop the surrounding area without sufficient community input. Through a combined effort with other organizations, we were able to stop the proposed development through perseverance and determination which successfully preserved Kewalo Basin Park as we know it today.

Our supporters have since grown and in November of 2009, we became a Non-Profit 501 C3 public charity and changed our name to Friends of Kewalos.

Our Mission:

To Protect, Preserve, and Malama Kewalo Basin Park and the surrounding shoreline and ocean, to ensure that the recreational user will continue to have access and the ability to enjoy the area for future generations to come.

Our goal is to stay organized to be able to mobilize quickly should the need arise again.
