PAST EVENTS
Save Our Kaka‘ako Movement (5/2005 - 7/2006)
Friends was able to rally the People to form the Save our Kaka‘ako Coalition to stop the development of Kaka‘ako Makai by Alexander and Baldwin and the Hawaii Community Development Authority(HCDA).
Coalition Members included:
• Save Our Surf(SOS)
• Hawaii State Bodysurfing Association
• Hui of He'e Nalu (Da Hui)
• Hui O Malama O Kaka‘ako Makai Paka
• Kaka‘ako Business and Landowners Association
• Ala Moana/Kaka‘ako Neighborhood Board
• Surfrider Foundation, Oahu Chapter
• Kewalo Boaters Association
• Sierra Club, Oahu Chapter
• Life of the Land
• Kaka‘ako Shoreline Park Plan
Through numerous rallies, a March to the Capitol, meeting with the Governor Lingle, and tons of oral and written testimonies at the 2006 Legislative session, the Red Shirts (that is what we were known as) were able to convince the Legislators unanimously except for one vote, to pass into law, HB 2555, which states: No Selling of Public Land and No building of Residential in Kaka‘ako Makai.
This law was the end to the luxury high rise condos. This last public ocean front land in urban Honolulu was saved.
This was truly a grassroots, People Power victory. It is an experience that will never be forgotten. Mahalo to all who were part of it.
Surfing contests Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Original 7/27/2007 Revised 2/2/2010
Friends worked collaboratively with the State of Hawaii Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) and the contest organizers to produce this agreement. From a high of 14 contests at the “Point” in 2006, we were able to bring that number down to eight, with 5 at the “Point” and the remaining 3 at either “Straight Outs” or “Rennicks”. Friends are not against contests…… just limiting the amount so that the public is able to enjoy the surf and the park.
Another important accomplishment was the making of the Surf Contest Schedule which comes out in late January and lists the eight contests for the entire year. In November, DOBOR meets with Friends and the contest organizers to establish the schedule for the upcoming year. This schedule is posted at the Park and on our website for all to see.

Kewalo Basin Park Cleanup 1st annual 6/23/2007
Coinciding with the International Day of Surfing and the first day of summer, Friends of Kewalos held their first Cleanup. It was a great day to beautify and give back to our park for all that it does to enrich our lives. The cleanup is followed by a short meeting to communicate to our supporters what is going on in the area. We have good ono food, entertainment and surfboard and prize giveaways. A real “feel good” event.
The first was such a great success we have one every year now.
Representation on the Kaka‘ako Makai Community Planning Advisory Council (CPAC)
In 2006, the Legislature passed House Concurrent Resolution (HCR 30) as a result of the public outcry in the Save Our Kaka‘ako movement. HCR 30 requested the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) to convene a working group to engage stakeholders, especially the ones that surfaced during the controversy to meaningfully participate in the development, acceptance, and implementation of any future plans for the development of KM(which includes Kewalos). Friends have been part of the CPAC since its creation in May of 2007. Through countless meetings and workshops we represented the interests of our mission. It is very critical that we keep tabs on the development of the whole of KM.
Ron Iwami, President of Friends of Kewalos, was a former Chairman and Vice Chairman
of CPAC. He continues on the council to represent Friends interests.
Working with Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA)
HCDA is the State Agency that oversees Kewalo Basin Park and all of KM. Throughout the years, Friends has developed a good collaborative working relationship with HCDA to resolve any concerns.
We worked closely with them on the recently completed Park renovations.
Mother Mairanne Cope Bronze Statue
Friends worked collaboratively with Sister William Marie Eleneki and the Sisters of Saint Francis to erect a statue at its present location on the grassy knoll as you enter the park.
The statue is to honor Mother Marianne Cope who came to Hawaii in 1883 to run the Kakaako Branch Hospital to care for Hansen Disease patients on the site of the Bank of Hawaii Building on the corner of Ward and Ala Moana Boulevard. In her spare time she would go to the shoreline of the Kewalo area and fish and relax just has we do today.
Please say hello to Sister Eleneki as she polishes the statue and trims the grass around it.
We are all blessed by Mother Marianne Cope watching over Kewalos.
