Q. What is the purpose of the organization? A. Our mission is to protect
Q. What is your stance on development for the area? A. Our group is not opposed to development per se; however we would like to see minimal impact for the Kewalo and adjacent Kakaako area, as there is already very heavy traffic in the area with little room for expansion of roads and access to the park. Overcrowding and access to the area is a very important consideration in future development for the area, and also brings up a quality of life issue for the many that already frequent the area for rest, exercise and recreation, as well as for those who live nearby.
Q. How does the organization plan to achieve its goals? A. Friends will go through the appropriate channels to achieve its mission. We are currently in contact with state agencies, HCDA, DOT/Harbors, and the Kakaako Neighborhood Board to express our concerns and ideas regarding development and other issues affecting or that may affect park users in the future.
Q. Is your group a non-profit organization? A. At this time we are neither "for profit" nor non-profit organization. We are currently an informal organization. We do not require a membership fee to join nor are we actively soliciting donations at this time. Q. What specifically would you like to see happen for the park? A. Most importantly, we want to preserve the parking lots for park users if there is commercial development in the immediate area. We would also like to improve and maintain and park facilities by working with the appropriate state agencies. For example; we would like to have another shower and possibly restrooms on the east side of the park near the Net House, and have existing restroom facilities improved and locked at night to prevent vandalism. In addition, we would like to see the benches fronting the ocean restored as they are in need of repair. Also, we would like to have surf contests and promotional events be kept to a reasonable level, so as to not exclude park users as often as it now does. Q. Who may join Friends? A. We welcome anyone who wants to support our mission. To join, please click on the "Join Friends" link. Mahalo for your support. Q. If I have any futher questions? A. We'd be happy to answer them, please send any questions to info@kewalo.org |
